Discover West Bengal: A Journey Through Culture and Beauty

Overview

The geographical variance of West Bengal is truly amazing , considering it is spread out over an area that is less than 90,000 sq.km. After all, it is the only Indian state to have access to both the sea and the Himalayan Mountain range. One of the reasons for such a wide geographical spectrum is the unusual shape of the state. Its northern region borders Nepal, Bhutan and the states of Sikkim and Assam. The much larger southern region has Bangladesh to its east and the states of Odisha and Jharkhand to the West. The two areas are joined by a relatively narrow strip of land that borders Bangladesh on the east and the states of Bihar and Jharkhand on the west.

West Bengal can be roughly broken down into two broad sections: the hills of the north and plains of the south. The northern region of Bengal divided into the Darjeeling Himalayas and the Dooars. The plains part of West Bengal.of the south can be broken into the North Bengal plains, the Rarh region, the Ganga delta, and the Sundarbans. The North Bengal plains can be found between the Dooars in the north and the Ganga River in the South . The Mahananda corridor , named after the eponymous river, is the narrow strip of land that connects the northern and the southern part of West Bengal.

The Dooars are the sloping floodplains located south of the Darjeeling Himalayas. Their name is derived from the word for ‘door‘’ in several regional languages, as the Dooars have multiple gateways leading to the hills of Bhutan. The Dooars are an extension of the Terai , the Himalayan floodplains of the neighboring states and Nepal. They are spread out over the districts of Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar as well as parts of Cooch Behar and Darjeeling districts. There are several national parks and nature reserves in the northern region . The national park Singalila, Neora Valley, Garumara and Jaldapara, the Maahananda Wildlife Sanctuary and Buxa Tiger Reserve are some of the famous one. In northern region famous Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) is running since 1879 to till date . Now DHR is under Unesco World Heritage as well as in Southern part of Bengal Sundraban is under Unesco world heritage site.
