Anemia Profile

Anemia Profile

Anemia Profile – This test measures serum Vitamin B12, folate and iron levels, as well as important blood indices that can help identify anemia, and provide information about the potential cause(s).

An Anemia #2 Essential Blood Test Panel includes Iron w/TIBC, Transferrin, Ferritin, Complete Blood Count (CBC), Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP-14), Vitamin B12, Folic Acid and Hemoglobin Solubility.

Iron Profile is a panel of blood tests that check the level of iron in the blood. Iron Profile shows how much of the iron is stored in the tissues. Iron Profile includes Serum Iron (Fe), Total Iron Binding Capacity and % Transferrin Saturation.

An initial workup for anemia includes a CBC, which is typically followed by ferritin and iron binding if anemia is indicated.

The diagnostic criterion for anemia is
  1. For men: Hemoglobin < 14 g/dL (140 g/L), hematocrit < 42% (< 0.42), or RBC < 4.5 million/mcL (< 4.5 × 10 12/L)
  2. For women: Hemoglobin < 12 g/dL (120 g/l), hematocrit < 37% (< 0.37), or RBC < 4 million/mcL (< 4 × 10 12/L)

The World Health Organization (WHO) criterion for anemia in adults is a hemoglobin (Hb) value of less than 12.5 g/dL. Children aged 6 months to 6 years are considered anemic at Hb levels less than 11 g/dL, and children aged 6-14 years are considered anemic when Hb levels are less than 12 g/dL.

In the United States, anemia is diagnosed if a blood test finds less than 13.5 g/dL in a man or less than 12 g/dL in a woman. In children, normal levels vary according to age.
