How to Choose a Loudspeaker Driver: Home vs Professional

The short answer

Choose by application first, then check the power rating standard, the impedance at your actual load, the sensitivity, the frequency range, and the enclosure the driver is designed for — in that order. Home drivers are built for accurate listening at moderate levels indoors. Professional drivers are built for high output over long hours and repeated transport. At every expo we do, someone picks up a driver at our stall, turns it over, and asks which one is more powerful. Almost always they are looking at the wattage sticker while they ask it.

It is an understandable question and it is the wrong one to ask first, and asking it first is what leads people to spend more than they needed to and still end up disappointed at the venue. Wattage is somewhere around fourth or fifth on the list of things that decide whether a loudspeaker system will do its job.

So this is the order we would actually use, written out properly, with our own published numbers as the worked examples. If you take nothing else from it, take the order.

What separates a home driver from a professional one

They are not better and worse versions of the same thing. They are built for different jobs, and the differences show up in the specifications.

Put a 6,000 W professional subwoofer in a living room and you have wasted money and annoyed your neighbours. Put a home woofer on a wedding stage and it will not survive the night. Neither outcome is the driver's fault.

Step 1 — Start with the job, not the wattage

The application fixes the category. The category fixes the size. Only after that do the numbers on the label mean anything.

Step 2 — The wattage on the box is three different numbers

This is where most of the money is lost in our market. Three quite different figures all get printed as "watts", and buyers compare them as though they were the same thing.

We publish the conditions we test under. Nominal power handling is measured to AES2-1984. Program power is defined as 3 dB above the nominal rating. Applied RMS voltage is 2.83 V for 8 ohms nominal impedance. All of it is written down on the Sweton test standard page, not held back for anyone who asks. When you are comparing two drivers, ask the other manufacturer for the same page. A specification with no stated test behind it is not a specification.

A check you can do standing at the counter

Voice coil diameter is much harder to fake than a wattage sticker. Across our own catalogue it tracks power handling closely: home drivers run 13.5 mm to 51.2 mm, professional drivers 44 mm to 152 mm. A driver claiming 3,000 W on a 50 mm coil is not what the carton says it is. Ask for the coil diameter, the magnet weight and the test standard. Three questions, and you will know quickly whether you are looking at a real specification or a printed one.

Step 3 — Match impedance to your actual load, not to the label

Impedance is the electrical load the speaker presents to the amplifier — commonly 4, 6 or 8 ohms. Two things about it cause most of the failures we hear about.

  • Wiring changes the load. Two 8‑ohm drivers in parallel present 4 ohms. Four present 2 ohms. Plenty of amplifiers are not rated to drive 2 ohms per channel, and running them there is the most common way an amplifier dies at an event.
  • Under-powering kills drivers too. An amplifier pushed into clipping to reach volume sends a squared-off waveform with high average energy straight into the voice coil. More drivers are destroyed by a small amplifier being flogged than by a large amplifier used sensibly.

The working rule for professional use: pick an amplifier whose rated output at your real load sits at or a little above the driver's program power, and set the limiter properly.

Step 4 — Sensitivity is the number that sets your amplifier bill

Sensitivity is the sound pressure a driver produces with one watt, measured at one metre. It looks like a minor figure and it has a large commercial consequence, because sound pressure runs on a logarithmic scale. Every extra 3 dB of sensitivity halves the amplifier power you need for the same loudness.

Read across that chart and the point is hard to miss. Six decibels of sensitivity is the difference between a 1,000 W amplifier channel and a 250 W channel for the same job — before you count cabling, power supply and cooling. In a real installation the gap narrows a little, because the voice coil heats up and the driver loses some efficiency as it does. The direction never reverses.

It is also why compression drivers carry sensitivity figures from 106 dB to 123 dB. A horn-loaded high-frequency unit makes its output from a fraction of the power the bass section is drinking, which is why no well-designed system amplifies every band equally.

Step 5 — Know which part of the band each driver actually owns

No single driver reproduces the whole audio band properly. The catalogue is organised around which slice of the spectrum each unit is built to cover.

Two things follow from this. First, a "full-range" driver is full-range for its size, not for the audible band — it will not produce useful output below its stated limit whatever cabinet you build for it. Second, the overlaps are where crossover design lives. Our dividing networks are supplied for crossover points between 1,200 Hz and 3,800 Hz, which is exactly the region where a mid-bass driver is running out of controlled response and a compression driver is comfortably inside its own.

Step 6 — The cabinet decides half of what you hear

This is the step people skip, and it is the one that costs the most. A driver is an electro-mechanical component, not a finished loudspeaker. What happens at low frequencies is decided jointly by the driver's Thiele-Small parameters and by the volume, tuning and porting of the box it sits in. A very good driver in a badly proportioned cabinet will lose to an ordinary driver in a correctly designed one, every time.

For a cabinet maker that is the difference between a box that measures the way it was meant to and one that has to be rebuilt after the first event. How we test — and the question to ask everyone else

Every figure in this article comes from the same published set of conditions:

  • Nominal power handling measured to the AES2-1984 standard.
  • Program power defined as 3 dB above the nominal rating.
  • Applied RMS voltage set to 2.83 V for 8 ohms nominal impedance.
  • Thiele-Small parameters measured after high-level 25 Hz sine preconditioning for four to eight hours, so the numbers describe a worked-in suspension rather than a brand-new one.
  • Linear X-max measured by mechanical excursion.
  • Frequency response and impedance curves measured with the MLS and sinusoidal functions of CLIO 12.5.

The preconditioning detail matters more than it sounds. A new suspension is stiff. Measure it before it has been worked and the resonance figure flatters the driver. Publishing how long we run it for is a small thing that tells you the numbers were taken honestly.
